CCC Corpsmembers Ready for Wildfire

“This is the time to train,” said Los Piños Corpsmember Matt Renstrom. “It’s about setting the right habits and expectations so during the summer we already know what we need to do.”

With fire season right around the corner, young adults in the California Conservation Corps are gearing up for the demanding months ahead.

Corpsmembers complete readiness drills that test their firefighting knowledge and skills. Activities include timed hikes, shelter deployment, and hand line construction.

Physical and mental fitness is essential to success. For Corpsmembers, protecting communities is worth the challenge.

“What’s most important is everybody’s morale during the training,” said Placer Corpsmember Nicholas Dunaway. “We do this keeping resources and people in mind.”

The CCC has 450 Corpsmembers across 15 centers, ready to respond at moments notice. Last year, crews were dispatched to 205 wildfire incidents. This year will be just as busy. To join the effort, visit ccc.ca.gov.
